GFP hosts Iftar event for refugees in Bristol

Good Faith Partnership and Bristol-based refugee charity Borderlands hosted an Iftar event on Thursday 4 April 2024 for around 45 people currently housed in hotels in Bristol.

Those who attended, mostly families, thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to cook food (they don’t have access to a kitchen while they are housed in the hotel) and cooked late into the night.

Among the comments from guests were:

“The spicy food is very comforting. A taste of home.”

“I have enjoyed your company. Thank you.”

“Cooking in this kitchen is amazing. When can we do this again?”

The Iftar event grew out of GFP’s Welcome Hubs, which seek to create moments of community, connection and relief for refugees and asylum seekers.

GFP Senior Consultant Joseph Davies approached Borderlands about partnering on an event when he heard they were looking to host an Iftar but seeking a venue.

Joseph said: “Borderlands knew the Pakistani family who cooked for the event, and helped with advertising it amongst the three Bristol city centre asylum hotels. We're both keen to keep exploring ways of collaboratively working together on projects like this in future.”

Iftar is the fast-breaking evening meal of Muslims in Ramadan at the time of adhan (call to prayer).
